The Scottish Government introduced changes to the nutritional requirements for food and drink in schools regulations in April 2021.
The changes to the regulations are based on the most up to date scientific evidence on diet and health and are designed to support the health of children and young people in the school setting. The food and drink that is provided across the school day is designed to support progress towards the Scottish Dietary Goals. This will help to ensure that children and young people, especially those receiving free school meals, have access to nutritionally balanced school lunches.
We have been working towards these changes over the last 2 years with a number of changes having been made with further changes coming into effect after Easter 2021 including all main meals will now include two portions of vegetables and a selection of fruit with each meal. For further information on the changes being introduced, please see the Parent Club website.
We would also like to reassure parents that the school meal service has worked extremely hard during the COVID-19 pandemic to continue to provide a school meals service as well as provide a safe working environment for our staff who are working to strict COVID-19 protocols.
Supply issue update
As you are aware, there are issues affecting food supplies across the country and these are impacting on Catering Services and our ability to provide the published menu for school meals.
Some food items are unavailable at short notice and it is not always an option to substitute products as they may contain different allergens to the original product and this is potentially dangerous.
This is a developing situation so please be aware that it may be necessary to remove menu items at short notice; this is a difficult situation for all of us but please be assured that we are doing everything we can to provide the full menu and provide a safe food service for all.
