A77 and A78 trunk roads

The A77 and A78 roads within South Ayrshire are trunk roads and are the responsibility of Transport Scotland.

Transport Scotland has awarded a contract for the maintenance of the A77 and the A78 to Scotland TranServ.

South Ayrshire Council is an active member of the North Channel Partnership link which promotes strategic improvements to the A77 and the A75.

These vital arteries are of the greatest importance to communities across South Ayrshire, the Council and community planning partners.

South Ayrshire Council strongly believes that Transport Scotland should be asked to address a number of issues:

  • Promote road safety and reduce the number of crashes; reduce injury and loss of life
  • Maximise the benefit of the trunk roads to the economy of South Ayrshire
  • Reduce the environmental impact of the trunk roads on communities in South Ayrshire

The Scottish Government has established the A77 Safety Group to focus on Road Safety issues that affect communities and road users on the A77 between Ayr and Stranraer. South Ayrshire Council is a member of this group working with other members to highlight the importance and urgency of improving the road.
