Gaelic education
The Education (Scotland) Act 2016 gives parents of children under the age of 5 years the right to request Gaelic medium primary education from the education authority in which the child is resident. Any request must set out, or be accompanied by, evidence that there is a demand for Gaelic medium primary education from parents of other children who are:
- Resident in the area of the authority to which the request is made, and
- In the same year group as the specified child.
Gaelic medium education is an established sector in Scottish education. It is currently available in a number of education authorities across Scotland. Gaelic medium education includes children who come from families where Gaelic is spoken and children from families with little or no background in the language. There is currently no provision within South Ayrshire Council itself; however, children from South Ayrshire currently have access to Gaelic medium education as a result of a partnership with East Ayrshire Council.
If you would like to request that your child receives Gaelic medium primary education, please send your contact details to Learning.RaisingStandards@south-ayrshire.gov.uk.
