The Safe Group is chaired by a representative from Scottish Fire and Rescue Service with SAC Senior Community Safety Officer as the Group's Support Officer.

What are the priorities of the Safe Group?

Clear priorities for the Safe group have emerged through research and information:

• To reduce the general level of violence on our streets and in our homes and increase detection rates.
• To reduce public perception of the level of crime and antisocial behaviour.
• To reduce the number of injuries and casualties in our homes and on our roads.

Safe Group Joint Action Groups (JAGS)

Five joint action groups have been established. Each group develops projects using the problem solving process agreed by the Safe Group and Community Safety Partnership. Links are also made with Problem-solving in communities.

SafeAyr Joint Action Group

The SafeAyr project brings together a range of initiatives to make Ayr town centre a safer and more attractive place to go out in over the weekend. It is led by the Safe Group in parallel with the initiatives of the Safer Scotland and Police Scotland Police Violence Reduction campaigns.

SafeAyr Shore Joint Action Group

The SafeAyr Shore initiative aims to improve community safety and reduce antisocial behaviour in and around Ayr Esplanade. It involves high visibility Police patrols during the summer months, particularly at weekends, Community Support Worker patrols, increased litter collections and noise monitoring by Environmental Health Officers. A raised public awareness of a zero tolerance approach to antisocial behaviour, along with many other initiatives, is aimed at making the shore a more attractive and safer place.

Antisocial Behaviour (Legal Issues) Joint Action Group

Road Safety Joint Action Group

The Reckless Driving Wrecks Lives initiative aims to improve young driver and passenger behaviour by instilling an increased sense of responsibility for themselves and others. In March 2005 the Community Safety Partnership, in conjunction with Police Scotland and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service , established an annual event aimed at senior secondary school pupils. The event demonstrates the effects of a serious road crash, including the impact on friends and family.
